More Than One Narrative
Introduction
On December 2, 2025, President Trump called all Somali-Americans 'trash.' Since then, actions by a few have been used to unfairly target and dehumanize a community that contributes greatly to our country.
Media coverage has focused on a single story, lacking depth and endangering the Somali community by painting all members with the same brush.
Such storytelling undermines American values and hopes for the future. The More Than One Narrative video series, with non-Somali allies sharing their experiences, counters harmful media narratives.
By sharing authentic stories from new perspectives, we challenge the national media's one-sided image. This project demonstrates the vital roles of Somali-Americans as family members, leaders, and professionals.
Objective
This project aims to counter the negative image created by national media by launching a campaign that shares positive stories about Somali people, told by everyday Americans. We want to start a movement that can grow and spread on its own, encourage others to film and submit their own stories, and build a collection of stories that support our media analysis report.
Together, these stories will help make a case for justice for the harm done to the Somali community.
